How to halve violent crime by 2030
In 2015, all the nations of the world adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to be achieved by 2030. SDG 5 and 16 including significant reductions in gender based violence, street violence and violence against children. As I showed in my book on Science and Secrets of Ending Violent Crime, we not only have the knowledge to achieve this, but internationally agreed guidelines and examples of cities that have halved violence within just a few years. We also have a growing number of cities committed to reducing violence by 50% before 2030. So what is needed to accelerate the changes needed to get smart on crime and stop the injuries, trauma and loss of life from violence? My short list of accelerators are: 1. getting professional courses on the planning and implementation of effective violence reduction as well as data tools to guide and measure results; 2. fostering violence reduction units at high level in governments to plan, guide investment, and measure results; 3. invest adequately and sustainably in what is proven to reduce violence including: a. diverting persons starting offending to services to meet their needs, b. long term social development to address the roots of violence, and c. smart and evidence based social outreach and change to address those most at risk to continuing violence.
