More news about the topic
The World Health Statistics series is WHO’s annual snapshot of the state of the world’s health. This 2018 edition contains the latest available data for 36 health-related Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicators. It also links to the three SDG-aligned strategic priorities of the WHO’s 13th General Programme of Work: achieving universal health coverage, addressing health emergencies and promoting healthier populations.
Regarding the SDG Target 16.1 which aims to significantly reduce all forms of violence and related death rates everywhere the WHO observes a worsening deterioration. In 2016, an estimated 180 000 people were killed in wars and conflicts. The global death rate due to conflicts in the past five years (2012-2016), at 2.5 deaths per 100 000 population, was more than double the average rate in the preceding five-year period (2007-2011). There were an estimated 477,000 murders, with four-fifths of all homicide victims being male. Men in the Region of the Americas were the most affected (31.8 per 100 000 population).
