Violent and racist crimes are on the up in Germany, according to official statistics on politically motivated crimes. Crimes by right-wing extremists hit their highest levels since records began in 2001.
The Federal Criminal Office (BKA) recorded around 8.5 per cent more politically motivated crimes in 2020 than in the previous year. This is a very disturbing development, even though politically motivated crimes only account for just under one per cent of all crimes. "Disturbing above all because this means that a trend of the past years is solidifying. It is also disturbing because politically motivated violent crime is clearly on the rise," Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer said. He sees a clear trend toward brutalization in Germany.
