  1. A global analysis of the impact of COVID-19 stay-at-home restrictions on crime
The stay-at-home restrictions to control the spread of COVID-19 led to unparalleled sudden change in daily life, but it is unclear how they affected urban crime globally. We collected data on daily counts of crime in 27 cities across 23 countries in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. We conducted interrupted time-series analyses to assess the impact of stay-at-home restrictions on different types of crime in each city. Our findings show that the stay-at-home policies were associated with a considerable drop in urban crime, but with substantial variation across cities and types of crime. Meta-regression results showed that more stringent restrictions over movement in public space were predictive of larger declines in crime. Source: Nature Human Behaviour
  2. Impact of COVID-19 on drug markets, use, harms and drug services in the community and prisons
Since early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a dramatic impact on the way we live, with European countries having to introduce unprecedented measures to protect public health. As with all areas of life, drug consumption, related harms and drug markets have been impacted, as have the services established to respond to drug-related problems. Source: EMCDDA
  3. How can we plan for urban futures beyond COVID-19?
As cities across the world plan their recovery from the COVID-19 crisis, it is more important than ever to think beyond the short and medium-term to plan and reimagine how people want to live, work and play in our cities in 2040 and beyond. Source: Transforming Society
  4. Epidemiology, not geopolitics, should guide COVID-19 vaccine donations
Vaccine donations are not the only solution to the gap that has emerged between countries with and without sufficient doses of COVID-19 vaccines. Yet, the potential number of surplus vaccine doses purchased by G7 nations is likely to be in the hundreds of millions or more. Source: The Lancet
  5. Narrative complexity in the time of COVID-19
During the COVID-19 pandemic, medicine and public health have grappled with challenges related to individual behaviour and decision making, both in terms of infection and more recently concerning the uptake of COVID-19 vaccines. Social theory has long pointed to the role of narrative when trying to grasp the complexity of understanding and decision making in times of crisis. Source: The Lancet
  6. Young people, COVID-19 and mental health: Now what?!
OECD asked young people about life during the COVID-19 pandemic. OECD expert Shunta Takino responds to their concerns about mental health. Take our survey and share your ideas and experiences. Source: OECD
