CoronaCrime #87

More news about the topic

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a terrible toll on lives, illness, and economic devastation and it is having diverse effects on violence and crime. Daily Prevention News publishes weekly a Corona Crime Issue dedicated to collecting related news and information.

  1. Inequalities and hope in times of covid
The book delves into international data and accounts, arguing that COVID-19 and inequality are a ‘syndemic’ in which pre-existing inequalities are worsening the impact of the pandemic, while many policy responses are exacerbating and deepening inequalities. The authors argue that these inequalities are political and not inevitable. The pandemic was a predictable (indeed, a predicted) event and its unequal effects could have been mitigated or avoided through better preparation. Source: Transforming Society
  2. Latin American Governments Easy Prey for Ransomware During COVID-19
A recent cyberattack that hit government websites in Brazil, including platforms that track vaccinations and epidemiological data on COVID-19, has stoked concerns about a surge in ransomware attacks on critical infrastructure in Latin American countries. Source: InSight Crime
  3. Digging deeper into alcohol-related deaths
It is probably no coincidence that this latest annual increase in deaths coincides with the COVID-19 pandemic. Patterns in the consumption of alcohol in the UK changed after a national lockdown was implemented in March, 2020. The long-term consequences are still being revealed, not only with regard to sustained and higher-risk drinking habits and their subsequent effects on health, but also in the treatment of patients with alcohol-related liver disease, whose access to care and support services has been interrupted, with potentially serious ramifications.
