Growing up with systemic racism in the USA
The USA has a long history of racism, which is still pervasive. Many adults from minority ethnic groups can vividly recall racial encounters during their childhood. Racism is known to have wide-ranging effects on adolescents across all dimensions of health and wellbeing. Emerging research is examining children's racial and ethnic identity, and the effects of racism during development.
Driven by the sociopolitical climate and Black Lives Matter movement in the USA and beyond, many young people are actively fighting for racial justice for themselves and future generations. Now more than ever, paediatricians and child health professionals must heed the call to action by the American Academic of Paediatrics (AAP) policy statement to address the impact of racism on child health. The effects begin early.
