Persistent Disparities in Suicide Rates and Risk Factors Among American Indian/Alaska Native People

Suicide rates are disproportionately high among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) people, especially non-Hispanic AI/AN, and culturally relevant suicide prevention strategies are needed to address this public health issue. A new CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, Suicides Among American Indian/Alaska Native Persons — National Violent Death Reporting System, 2015–2020, shows disparities in circumstances contributing to suicide among all AI/AN people. AI/AN people have greater odds than non-AI/AN of experiencing relationship problems and substance use, and lower odds of known mental health conditions and any history of mental health or substance use treatment, according to data from CDC’s National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS).
