Involving Former Combatants in Disengagement and Deradicalization

Christina Foerch (Fighters for Peace)

Former combatants can be actively involved in supporting disengagement and deradicalisation processes, especially regarding Islamic State returnees with European nationalities from Syria and Iraq to Europe. It is likely that some of the IS returnees will not be convicted, especially minors. However, it is important to support deradicalisation and disengagement processes of these minors, especially if they will remain outside juvenile detention. These minors might mistrust state institutions and official social workers might find it hard to connect with them and trust-building processes might be difficult.

Ex-combatants from a comparable geographic, cultural and social background (Lebanon) who themselves experienced war and violence, but have deradicalised and reintegrated into normal society, might be ideal mentors and be able to build trust with the young clients. They can fill important gaps in the already existing institutional structures and become an important component of deradicalisation work and complement social and youth workers. Also, former combatants have been effectively engaged in primary prevention with the target groups of youth with a refugee and migrant background who might be vulnerable to radicalisation and extremism. In Germany, former combatants were an integral part of a project funded by the BAMF (German Office for Migration and Refugees).

“DenkPause”. A psychosocial class training
Winnie Plha (Denkzeit-Gesellschaft e.V.)

Social competencies are already developed in the first years of life – especially along the experience of beneficial relationships – and it is not easy to compensate for early deficits in later years. Nevertheless, the school can try, for example in the context of project days, to make people aware of aspects of social action and to develop strategies for dealing with conflictual situations. For this purpose, a primary preventive group offer based on the contents of the “Denkzeit method” was designed – the “DenkPause”. In five modules, the children and adolescents are encouraged to deal with topics such as problem-solving skills, analysis of social situations, projective tendencies, affect perception, affect tolerance and affect control as well as moral issues and to apply the acquired knowledge directly in everyday school life. In the lecture, the professional background, the structure of the programme and previous practical experiences are presented.
