#Against online hate

Dr. Claudia Brandkamp (Deutsche Telekom Security GmbH) & Marike Mehlmann-Tripp (Deutsche Telekom)

Hate on the net is not only hurtful and humiliating, but a real danger to our living together according to democratic rules in the digital world – the goal is thus not only the exclusion of individuals, but of entire groups and ultimately the division of society and the shifting of the boundaries of what can be said. For the victims, it often means that life becomes hell, and fear also spills over into the analogue world. Much of what becomes “strategic hate” begins in childhood and adolescence.

The internet has long been an integral part of young people's lives. According to a recent study, 97% of 12- to 19-year-olds are online almost every day, the majority with their own smartphone. They also experience the dark side of the internet: more than 90% of those surveyed said they know what hate on the internet is all about – whether as a victim or as a reader. Almost every third person reports that false or insulting things have already been spread about their own person. What can I do if I am insulted and threatened in a chat? How do I react if someone has misused my data for a fake profile? How do I protect myself if a stranger wants photos of me? Is it my own fault? The dangers that lurk for children and young people on the net are manifold, the need for answers is great.

KOMPASS – A security initiative of the Hessian Ministry of the Interior and Sport
Yvonne Nadine Winterfeld-Henkel (Hessian Police) & Jan Schneider (Hessian Ministry of the Interior and Sport)

The Central Office for Crime Prevention and Road Safety in the Hessian State Office of Criminal Investigation, together with the staff unit “Gemeinsam Sicher In Hessen (GSIH)” in the Hessian Ministry of the Interior, presents the prevention initiative “KOMPASS (KOMmunalProgrAmmSicherheitsSiegel)” of the Hessian Ministry of the Interior for the cities and municipalities in Hessen.

KOMPASS is a component of the umbrella brand GSIH. In addition to KOMPASS, the warning application “hessenWarn” and a safety portal, which is to map various prevention and safety initiatives in Hessen, are combined there. KOMPASS aims at a sustainable interlocking and even closer cooperation between citizens, police and municipalities. Existing measures are to be put to the test and a detailed list of measures is to be drawn up on how the feeling of safety and security can be further improved locally. More than 130 municipalities are now participating in this successful model, which is unique in Germany. Many more municipalities are waiting in the wings. Several municipalities have now been awarded the “KOMPASS Safety Seal” – an award for successful participation in the prevention initiative. With the new modules “KOMPASSpartner” and “KOMPASSregion”, smaller municipalities in particular are now offered easy entry into the safety programme.
