Public space protection: a training platform for local stakeholders

More news about the topic

Public spaces in cities are dense and rich places of exchange, culture, commerce and leisure. Because they are highly frequented and have an open character, they can be subject to a number of threats, such as terrorism, crime, or excessive crowd gatherings. Ensuring that public spaces remain open, accessible, inclusive and safe is a complex challenge.

Local and regional authorities are well-placed to design and manage safe public spaces, but they cannot do this alone. They need to involve a wide range of local stakeholders from the public and private sectors (urban planners, first responders, mobility services, local businesses, etc.). To fulfil their role, all those actors must be equipped with adequate skills, vocabulary and tools to coordinate actions and cooperate closely.

This is why the EU-funded Secu4All project developed a free online training platform to empower local actors to cooperate in securing public spaces. There, you will find introductory materials on risk and vulnerability assessments, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), the ethical use of innovative technologies, and crisis management communication. The content is structured so learners can either follow it linearly or pick and choose according to their own needs and interests, on their own time.
