Violence against women and girls in Sudan's conflict zones

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has substantially exacerbated the crisis of gender-based violence, including sexual violence, directed against women and girls, revealing crucial gaps in health services and support systems. Although the increase in violence against women and girls is alarming, examining additional dimensions enables a more comprehensive understanding of the crisis.

The conflict has severely affected rural and displaced populations, complicating the access to care women and girls need. Many health facilities have been destroyed or are inaccessible due to the ongoing violence. Mobile clinics and outreach programmes are often inadequate, resulting in a severe lack of medical and psychological support for those in greatest need.

Local community-based organisations have had a vital role in providing support, raising awareness, and advocating for survivors.

 

However, their efforts are frequently constrained by resource limitations and security challenges. Strengthening these organisations and integrating them into broader response frameworks could enhance their effectiveness and reach.
