One Billion Rising: The biggest mass action to end violence against women

One Billion Rising is the biggest mass action to end violence against women (cisgender, transgender, and those who hold fluid identities that are subject to gender-based violence) in human history. The campaign, which launched on Valentine’s Day 2012, began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS.

So much has changed in the last fourteen years. But it feels like little has changed. Women have much more voice, a sense of their bodies and of themselves. Yet at the same time, their rights are completely being undermined and eradicated. These two currents are going on simultaneously. There are powerful social movements and the strength of global solidarity – as we all are also witnessing the escalation of late -stage patriarchy, which is increasingly getting more desperate and maniacal.

On the 14th of February we rise to
End the ravages of
Religious suppression and control
False media sowing fear
Patriarchal, misogynist, exclusionary cultures
Divisions and inequality
Chronic Capitalism and plundering of resources
Devastating poverty
Militarization at the expense of social services
Control, violation, removal and damaging of women’s bodies
Discrimination against immigrants
Racism
Wars
Occupation
Violence
