Organised crime and urban violence: European and United States’ perspectives

While many traditional indicators of urban violence rates, such as homicide and robbery, are globally decreasing, crimes and the fear of crime such as violence against women, organised crime, and discriminatory violence against vulnerable groups continue to be a major threat to urban security and social cohesion. Although organised crime and urban violence are international phenomena, criminal groups are constantly adapting to local environments and contexts to guarantee successful operations and the longevity of their networks. Similarly, the experience of these phenomena and strategies taken to prevent it are different in each national context, for example in North and South American. Each local experience brings with it a wealth of information that can be used to better understand the root causes of organised crime and urban violence, thus to create more effective policies to counter the phenomena.
