Conducted in collaboration with the Department of Penitentiary Administration (DAP) in France, the objective of this 18-month project, which ended in December 2017, was to supervise the implementation of an intervention response for individuals who have been radicalized or are in the process of radicalization within the Penitentiary Services for Integration and Probation (SPIP) in the probation system. This “intervention response” is understood as a set of actions and initiatives implemented at the institutional level to counter violent radicalization, namely:
• The identification of people who have been radicalized or are in the process of radicalization
• A reporting procedure both internally and with relevant institutions
• An intervention response with the radicalized individuals once they have been identified.
ICPC conducted an action-research with three SPIP in Lyon, Grenoble and Nice, that developed experimentally, assessed and systematized prevention and intervention practices through the development of methodological materials. The ultimate goal of this project is for the DAP to be able to set guidelines to direct the SPIP’s action within the probation system. ICPC is thus hoping to contribute evidence-based interventions to the growing number of initiatives targeting radicalisation and violent extremism being developed in prison and probation contexts.
