iDove – Interfaith Dialogue on Violent Extremism

Violent extremism is a global issue. Whether it has a political, ideological, racist or religious background, the problem of youth radicalization affects African as well as European societies in the same way. In this context, the GIZ cooperates with the African Union on interreligious dialogue and preventing violent extremism (PVE). During the Intercontinental Youth Forum on Violent Extremism (Addis Ababa, February 2017), young activists had the chance to exchange ideas with one another, as well as with scientists, religious actors and individuals who have experienced radicalization and de-radicalization themselves. In that context, participants developed a framework for small, local and youth-driven projects focusing on PVE. The projects will cover the areas of communication, virtual initiatives and community initiatives; for example media training, capacity building or arts and sports projects. Four micro-projects are currently being implemented in Mali, Kenya, Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In addition, together with the youth activists involved in iDove, a Training of Trainers (ToT) course on PVE and the promotion of social cohesion, with a specific focus on youth work, is developed. The preliminary results of the micro projects as well as the ToT Handbook are presented to the visitors of the DPT.

Gewalttätiger Extremismus ist eine globale Herausforderung. Politisch, ideologisch, rassistisch oder religiös motiviert – das Problem der Radikalisierung Jugendlicher betrifft afrikanische wie europäische Gesellschaften gleichermaßen. Vor diesem Hintergrund kooperieren das GIZ Sektorvorhaben Werte, Religion und Entwicklung und die Afrikanische Union im Bereich interreligiöser Dialog und Extremismusprävention. Im Rahmen des Intercontinental Youth Forums on Violent Extremism 2017 in Addis Abeba hatten junge Aktivist/innen die Gelegenheit sich unter einander, mit Wissenschaftler/innen, aber auch mit religiösen Persönlichkeiten und Menschen mit Deradikalisierungserfahrungen auszutauschen. Die Teilnehmer/innen entwickelten u.a. Rahmenbedingungen für kleine, lokal verortete und von Jugendlichen angetriebene Projekte zur Extremismusprävention in den Bereichen Kommunikation/ Digitalisierung und Innovative Gemeindeinitiativen. Vier Kleinstprojekte werden auf dieser Grundlage derzeit in Mali, Kenia, Kamerun und der Demokratischen Republik Kongo durchgeführt. Zusammen mit den iDove Jugendlichen entwickelt die GIZ außerdem ein Training of Trainers (ToT) Kurs zur Extremismusprävention und der Förderung sozialer Kohäsion mit einem Fokus auf Jugendarbeit. Die vorläufigen Ergebnisse der Kleinstprojekte sowie das ToT Handbuch werden den Besuchern des DPT vorgestellt.
